'Not That I Need the Money': Angel Reese Speaks Candidly on WNBA's Salary Problem

One of the biggest issues hounding the WNBA this season has been the negotiations surrounding a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) — and the threat of a potential lockout if no agreement is reached.

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese has involved herself in the discourse as players continue to fight for better rights from the league. This primarily centers on higher pay, with the players’ union demanding significantly higher annual salaries (the current super max contract is at $250,000 per year).

Another major issue is revenue shares. Currently, players reportedly receive just 9.3% of the league’s revenue, which represents a significant disparity compared to other professional leagues in the United States, where players typically receive around 50% of the revenue.

According to Reese, this is the non-negotiable for her in this new CBA deal.

"Team Revenue," Reese said in an interview with ESPN. "The revenue shares, that's really important for us. We deserve it. I know we're not letting up. I know we're going to do whatever it takes to get what we deserve.

“I'm just going to continue to educate myself on what's going on and staying involved. I know my voice, I know my platform, and I know when I speak and people are listening.”

Chicago Sky Star Angel Reese Doesn't Need the Money

The two-time All-Star then went on to say that she’s doing this for her peers and for the future of the WNBA.

"Not that I need the money, but it's for everybody else," she continued. "It's the people that are coming behind me, it's the people that have already played before me, so that's why I'm going to continue to speak."

Reese is one of the most popular players in the league today. Her current contract with Sky is worth $324,383 for four years, or approximately $ 81,100 per season.

However, the 23-year-old has multiple income streams on top of her WNBA salary, which include her various endorsement deals, her “Unapologetically Angel” podcast and other media ventures as well as a number of business investments off the court.

As she implied in her statement above, she's pretty set financially at this point, but she's still going out of her way to make sure her fellow WNBA players also get their slice of the pie.
