In the wake of a blockbuster WNBA trade, an old interview of Sophie Cunningham discussing Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has resurfaced.

The Fever recently acquired Cunningham from the Phoenix Mercury in a three-way trade. Cunningham is now set to join Clark, one of the most talked-about young stars in basketball.

A past interview on “The Travis Hearn” podcast from October 2024, shared by Ballislife.com on X, is now making rounds again.

Cunningham was asked about Clark’s impact and the mixed reactions she receives from fans and players.

“Oh my god. No, dude. Absolutely not. I think that she’s a gem. I’ve never really, I didn’t know her,” Cunningham said when asked if she disliked Clark.

“She’s lovely. She has a lot of pressure on her shoulders and I think a lot of people always have a lot to say about people they don’t even know or shoes they’ve never been in.”

Cunningham also spoke about Clark’s rising influence on women’s basketball.

“She’s handling the pressure very well. She has done a lot of great things for women’s basketball and I’m a fan. I would love to play with her one day, for real.”

In the interview, Cunningham further acknowledged the divide between veteran players and newer stars like Clark.

“I see both sides, she explained. "When you have older players in the league who worked so hard but didn’t get the same recognition or pay, it can create some tension. But this is amazing for women’s basketball. So many fresh eyes are on the sport now.”

Now, that statement has turned into reality as Cunningham joins Clark in the Fever.

After the trade, Cunningham reacted by posting on Instagram Story, reinforcing her excitement for the new chapter.

With the Fever reshaping their roster, Cunningham is expected to play a key role alongside Clark. The Fever will open their season on May 17 against the Chicago Sky and all eyes will be on Cunningham as she teams up with the star she once praised.
