Being that she was the No. 1 pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft, former UConn star Paige Bueckers was likely well aware that her team would endure some struggles.
With that being said, the Dallas Wings have the second-worst record in the WNBA, sitting at 5-13 on the year. This means Bueckers has already experienced more losses in her couple of months as a pro than she did during her last two years at UConn (9).
While this isn't an indictment on her, as she is averaging 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game, while also being named a WNBA All-Star starter, it certainly has people curious to see how she is handling the adversity.
The team's struggles have also led many fans to point the finger at first-year head coach Chris Koclanes and his coaching staff. Despite the backlash the coaching staff has been facing, Bueckers made it clear when speaking to the media on Wednesday that they have her support, according to Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints.
"Paige Bueckers says the 'whole' Wings coaching staff has been 'amazing,'” wrote Mistretta.
It is easy to blame a coaching staff, but it is worth noting that the Wings have been ravaged by injury this year. According to Myah Taylor of the Dallas Morning News, the Wings had just six players practicing at the end of Wednesday's practice as injuries piled up.
The injury report for Thursday's game against the Phoenix Mercury currently lists five players as either out or as game-time decisions.
While fans may want to see Bueckers and the Wings contending for a title immediately, there is currently a lot working against them. With that being said, it certainly doesn't hurt the staff to get Bueckers' stamp of approval.
