The Dallas Wings and their two star guards, Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale, showcased the potential of what could be a dynamite backcourt combo for years to come—defeating the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty 92-82 on Monday night at College Park Center.
Bueckers and Ogunbowale each scored a game-high 20 points, as the Wings shot an efficient 46% from the floor.
Ogunbowale has found her rhythm since the All-Star Break, averaging 18.5 points, six assists, two rebounds and a steal across 32 minutes per game.
“For me, it wasn’t about my performance, it was about Arike’s,” Bueckers said. “She had 20 points, 14 assists, only one turnover. Playing within the offense, on both ends of the floor. We’ve talked about controlling what we can, staying focused. It’s not always pretty, but tonight’s story should be about her.”
Ogunbowale made history during the game—becoming the first player in franchise history to record a points-assists double-double in a single half, recording 15 points and 10 assists before halftime. She’s also just the third player in league history to accomplish the feat.
“Just incredibly proud of her resolve,” Koclanes said. “It’s a long season. To hear how levelheaded she and Paige are, that’s encouraging as a coach. Arike’s been calm, letting the game come to her, making simple decisions, trusting teammates. Proud of her for stringing good games together.”
With Bueckers and Ogunbowale finding their rhythm together, the Wings’ dynamic backcourt could be the foundation of something special in Dallas, as the young squad continues building toward long-term success.
