The sports trading card collectible market has taken off in recent years as many hobbies found new audiences during the COVID lockdown years. Whether it's rookie cards or memorabilia of sports icons like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Victor Wembanyama, LeBron James, or Shohei Ohtani, the values have steadily climbed in recent years as a new generation of fans find creative ways to invest in the future of their favorite athletes.
A rare Caitlin Clark trading card collectible has been bid up to $40,000 on Goldin Auctions, a leading sports collectible marketplace which consigns and sells "pieces of sports and pop culture," according to their website.

The card in question is a 2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Throwback Signatures Gold Vinyl Prizm Caitlin Clark Signed Rookie Card (#1/1).
For those not fluent in sports card lingo, this means the card was made in 2024 by the trading card company Panini, the WNBA's licensed partner to produce the league's cards, which allows them to reproduce the team logos, names, likenesses, and so on.
Prizm is the set or product. Panini makes several WNBA products every year, including Origins and Select. Prizm is known for its vibrant colors and glossy, reflective finish on its cards.
Throwback Signatures is an autograph insert set within the Prizm product. It includes current WNBA stars like Indiana Fever's Kelsey Mitchell and former players like Seattle Storm's Sue Bird or Los Angeles Sparks' Lisa Leslie.
What sets this card apart is that it is a Gold Vinyl Prizm parallel, of which only one is made. Hence, the serial number "1 of 1" designation. Parallel sets like the Throwback Signatures have several variations, such as Green Prizms or Red Prizms, which, as the name suggests, are different color varieties of the insert set. A Gold Vinyl Prizm is one of the two "1 of 1" color parallels.
While some colors, like green in this insert set, are only slightly more rare than the "base" or standard insert from the set, other color parallels are much more difficult to find. And with that rarity, they are often given serial numbers. Like the Red Prizms are numbered to 99, meaning there are only 99 Red Prizms from this set.
The odds of finding or "hitting" a Gold Vinyl Prizm card are exceedingly rare, which will likely allow it to challenge the record set by another Caitlin Clark autographed rookie card, which Goldin sold for $366,000 last month. According to Goldin, that was the most ever for any women's sports card.
The auction ends on April 26 at 10 p.m. Eastern. The chase is on for Caitlin Clark autographed rookie cards.
