Phoenix Mercury add two assistant coaches to their arsenal
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Continuing to shake things up, Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts’ staff has increased in size and in experience today.

Via press release, the WNBA franchise announced that Megan Vogel and Michael Joiner are heading to the desert, becoming assistant coaches as the upcoming 2024 season is slowly approaching.

Megan Vogel

Vogel comes from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in which she spent 11 years with their women’s basketball program. Adding along to the fact that she was the associate head coach for two seasons with the Phoenix, she helped guide them to six regular-season and four tournament championships in the Horizon League (NCAA Division I). As a result, Green Bay made four NCAA Tournament appearances in her tenure.

She started out as a player for South Dakota State University (2003-07) before being selected as the 19th pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics.

Vogel’s knowledge and expertise has led her to other assistant coaching opportunities at St. Cloud State (2010-13), Minnesota State Mankato (2009) and St. Peter High School (2009).

Michael Joiner

Joiner was a forward under Tibbetts for two seasons in the NBA G League (formerly D League) with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, but now he gets to work alongside his former coach on the sidelines in Arizona.

Before he retired as a player, Joiner’s career on the court went international as he made stops in China, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia, Japan and Korea.

Joiner was assistant coach for the Memphis Hustle in the G League since 2019 prior to taking the position with the Mercury.
