The WNBA community is thinking of Brittney Griner this week. That's because the All-Star center was at the center of a scary incident at her
Griner, who signed a contract with the Atlanta Dream this offseason, was set to be a guest speaker at the Women Grow Leadership Summit in National Harbor, Maryland. However, she ditched the event after discovering a piece of duct tape near her hotel room that had a disturbing message on it.
According to TMZ, the words "Gay Baby Jail" were written on a piece of duct tape by Griner's entryway. The WNBA star, who is openly gay, was arrested in Russia back in 2022. She detained for nearly 10 months before the United States secured her freedom in a prisoner swap. It's easy to understand why that message by her entryway mortified her.
Hopefully for Griner, the latest update on this situation will give her some closure.
The Prince George's County Police Department investigated this incident at them Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. It's been determined that this was nothing more than an unfortunate coincidence.
"Detectives have learned the phrase 'gay baby jail' is commonly used as a video game reference," the department told TMZ. "At the time the tape was located, a large convention was taking place at the Gaylord which attracts thousands of people, many with an interest in anime as well as video game enthusiasts. At this time, detectives have uncovered no link to or threat against the guest who located the tape."
The police department added that its "detectives are working to determine who placed the piece of tape, when it was done and the intention behind it."
Even though Griner didn't attend this week's event, Women Grow CEO Chanda Macias supports her decision.
"We are actively working with the venue and authorities to investigate how this happened and hold those responsible accountable," Macias said. "The safety of every woman at this conference remains our top priority. Women Grow was founded on the belief that women should be able to lead without fear or intimidation."
Griner has received plenty of love and support from her fans over the past few hours.
