It was another wild Game 1 ending for the Indiana Pacers, who have made a habit of wild endings here in the NBA playoffs, having pulled off unlikely fourth-quarter comebacks against both the Cavaliers and Knicks in previous Game 1s. This one, like the others, was capped by a last-second game-winner from Tyrese Haliburton for a 111-110 win.
The Pacers won despite committing 19 turnovers in the first half and trailing by 12 points. They fell behind by 15 points with 9:42 in the fourth quarter. But, according to Haliburton, the belief they could win was always there.
"When I got off the bus, when I put on my shoes. I mean, there was never a disbelief as a group, honestly," he said. "You have a (first) half like that where you're throwing the ball to the other team, we like chaos. We like controlled chaos but that was just chaos, ugly.
"But I think we, as a group, came today -- we got like 20 turnovers in the first half. We only gave up, I don't remember how many points -- nine. That's not that bad, you know, if you think of it that way, try to look at it glass half-full. I think as a group, like we never think the game is over, ever, honestly speaking, ever. That never creeps in. I think we just keep talking as a group, how can we walk this team down."
It was not a coincidence that Haliburton mentioned his shoes--he debuted his new signature Pumas for the game.
After Haliburton made his dramatic 21-footer for the win, the reactions came from all over. Among those was Fever star Caitlin Clark, who has grown close with Haliburton during her two years sharing the spotlight with him in Indiana.
"YOU CANT MAKE IT UP," Clark wrote.
Puma Basketball, which once courted Clark but ultimately lost out to Nike, offered a quick response: "YOU REALLY CAN’T."

Fans responded less by appreciating Haliburton's make than by lamenting the fact that Puma could have had Clark signed, and would have likely produced a signature shoe for her by now--rather than Nike, which is slow-playing a new Clark shoe.
Clark, for her part, is still recovering from a quad injury she suffered in a loss to the Liberty on May 24. She will be out for Saturday's game against the Sky, and will be day-by-day thereafter.
Game 2 of the NBA Finals will see Haliburton and the Pacers take on the Thunder on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.
