Raven Johnson has her own branding and she is ready to bring that through the Indiana Fever. The former South Carolina Gamecocks player was selected 10th overall by the Fever in this year’s draft, and the team knows what it will get from her.
Fever coach Stephanie White calls her a winner and previewed the impact the 23-year-old will have on her team.
"Raven is a point guard that primarily has had the ball in her hands. So I think it gives us some versatility," White told reporters.
"Thankfully, having a couple of different guards gives us the ability to allow Kelsey [Mitchell] to rest a little bit, too."
There are a number of familiar faces in Indiana for Johnson. First, there’s superstar Caitlin Clark, whom she battled when the Gamecocks faced the two-time WNBA All-Star’s Iowa Hawkeyes in March Madness. She will also reunite with former South Carolina teammate Aliyah Boston.
Johnson is not a heavy scorer like Clark and Boston, but she is confident in what she can bring to the table. She celebrated her WNBA milestone through an elegant photo shoot, calling herself a “baddie.”
Friends and fans can only say good things about her.
"REAL PRESIDENTIAL!!! FOREVER HER," stylist Brittany Hampton wrote.
"," Los Angeles Sparks and Johnson's former teammate Zia Cooke commented.
"The BADDEST ❤️❤️❤️," another one said.
Johnson’s draft profile describes her as a fearless guard who is capable of scoring, but whose main strength is quarterbacking the offense while also serving as the team’s primary defender against the opponent’s best guard.
She said she is ready to get to work with the Fever’s top players and learn from them.
“Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell — I think I’ll learn a lot from them,” Johnson said during the draft night.
“I’m going to be a sponge. I’m probably going to be gnat, too, because I’m going to ask them a lot of questions…They like to win. I think that that’s really big.”
