After the blockbuster trade of former Las Vegas Aces player Kelsey Plum, A’ja Wilson let’s her feelings be known about her future with the Aces.
Some would consider a third-consecutive championship with the Aces would have been the storybook ending to Wilson’s career.
It didn’t go that way. The New York Liberty went on to win the WNBA championship and sent the Aces back to the drawing board to make another championship run.
Wilson was recently honored by TIME Magazine as Woman of the Year with other female athletes.
In the interview she acknowledges that not winning a third championship was a bitter pill to swallow, but she has moved on and realized that the Aces cannot always be on top.
“It just wasn’t our time,” she said. “It’s part of the game — it’s the healthy balance that you’ve got to fight through.”
As the season approaches, Wilson and the Aces are looking forward to reclaiming what’s theirs.
During the interview, she was asked if she would ever be open to playing for another team; her answer should give Aces fans some relief.
“That’s more of a front-office question, but Vegas will forever be my home,” Wilson said. “I was their first draft pick ever of the franchise, so they really brought me in. We set the standard for the league to follow, and we put a lot of other franchises in the league on their heels. If I could retire an Ace, I would love to. I don’t see myself putting on any different jersey.”
With Wilson at her peak, the Aces are the top contenders this season.
The team has started rebuilding by trading Kelsey Plum, acquiring Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, Tiffany Mitchell, and Dana Evans, and acquiring former Seattle Storm star Jewell Loyd.
