New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello is one of the most qualified people fit to coach a championship-level team.
Brondello has more experience in the WNBA than almost every other coach. The only current coach who can top her tenure is Cheryl Reeve, who is in her 16th season with the Lynx in 2025.
As of right now, Sandy is helping New York break records and start this season off at the right pace to win a second consecutive championship.
Sandy Brondello has remained loyal to the Liberty for four seasons. Before then, she led the Phoenix Mercury for eight years, making the playoffs each year and winning one championship. She began her coaching career in 2005 as an assistant coach (and later head coach) for the San Antonio Silver Stars. Afterwards, she became an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks from 2011 to 2013.
In 2017, Brondello was appointed to the Australian National Team— the Opals.
As head coach there, she led the team to major accomplishments, including a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. A few years later, Brondello returned to the Opals to lead them to a bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was Australia’s first women’s basketball Olympic medal since 2012.
Sandy Brondello is the winningest coach for the Liberty, with a regular-season win percentage of 71.2. She is the second-longest active tenured coach in the Metropolitan area’s major four pro sports (basketball, football, baseball, and hockey). Currently, New York is on a nine-game win streak and remains undefeated in the regular season. This ties them for their all-time win streak record, which was back in 2023. Continuing the triumphs, the Liberty hold the record for most three-pointers in a game, 19, which occurred this season against the Chicago Sky.
As if things couldn’t get any better for Brondello, she was recently awarded head coach of the month. This is her fourth time being awarded this title, and her third with the Liberty.

On top of Sandy Brondello’s decades of coaching, she played professionally herself.
She has the experience and understands what her players go through as professional athletes. She pushes them to be their own best, but also to work as a unit.
This season, Liberty newcomer Natasha Cloud was named player of the week. This is the first time Cloud has received this honor, and she has been in the league for ten seasons.
But this is her first season with New York. Sabrina Ionescu is also coming out on top, after scoring the most three-pointers in Liberty history and becoming the fastest player in the WNBA to reach 400 three-pointers. Brondello knows what her players need and where they thrive, getting them the opportunities and recognition that they deserve.
There is more to come and more records to break, not just for the Liberty, but for the woman who works relentlessly behind the curtain to give us the team we all know and love today.
