
All things considered, Athletes Unlimited Basketball has always provided fans with the best players. This season was no different with Olympic Medalists, WNBA Champions, and award winners. Season Five kicked off on Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
Now, the league now have identities with new teams. In the Game One of the doubleheader, the Rhythm faced the Glow.
Here, guard Lexie Brown and the Rhythm squared off against forward NaLyssa Smith and the Glow to open the Athletes Unlimited Basketball season. Smith scored the first two points of the season as the Glow took a commanding 33-13 lead after the first quarter. She scored eight points in the quarter as Ariel Atkins of the Chicago Sky had seven.
However, the Rhythm found its rhythm in quarter number two, outscoring the Glow 20-11. At the half, the Glow held a 44-33 lead. Once again, the Rhythm scored more than the Glow in a quarter with 21 points to the Glow’s 17.
Five players scored in double figures for the Glow, including center Tina Charles. The eight-time WNBA All-Star won MVP 1 honors with 17 points and nine rebounds, earning 554 total leaderboard points. Smith won MVP 3 honors with a double-double of 16 points and boards.
Next, guard Zia Cooke scored 15 points in 19 minutes of action. Atkins added 12 points and while Los Angeles Sparks forward had 10 points.
Despite the loss, guard Kia Nurse of the Sky led all scorers and the Rhythm with 22 points and garnering MVP 2 honors. Also, Indiana Fever guard Bree Hall scored 17 points in the victory. Nurse and Hall accounted for six of the Rhythm’s eight three-pointers with three apiece.
Up next in the second game of the doubleheader was guard Bria Hartley and the Gold Rush facing forward Alysha Clark and the Eclipse. It was a close first quarter as the Eclipse led by a 28-25 score. Forward Asia Taylor led the team with six points as New York Liberty guard Rebekah Gardner had five. For the Gold Rush, Fever guard Odyssey Sims had seven points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, the action remained close as the Gold Rush were down 53-47 to the Eclipse at halftime. Sparks guard Sarah Ashlee Barker and forward Teana Muldrow combined for 11 of the Gold Rush’s 22 points in the second. Barker scored six while Muldrew added five. Gardner led the Eclipse in the quarter with six points, both shots coming beyond the arc.
The third quarter saw the Eclipse’s grow to eight points with a 77-69 score entering quarter number four. Unlike the previous three quarters, the Gold Rush failed to score 20 points in the fourth. Ultimately, the Eclipse pulled away, eclipsing 100-point mark with a 101-83 victory.
With respect to the MVPs of the game, it was all Eclipse as Taylor was the MVP 1. She scored 22 points in 19 minutes of play, going 63.6 percent from the field. What’s more, Gardner took home MVP 2 honors with 17 points on seven-of-11 shooting.
Connecticut Sun forward Aneesah Morrow put up the second double-double of the doubleheader and MVP 3 Honors. Morrow had 14 points with 13 boards. Kaitlyn Chen of the Golden State Valkyries and Las Vegas Aces forward Kierstan Bell each scored 10 points in the win.
Shifting to the Gold Rush, Sims led the squad with 18 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Aerial Powers of the Fever scored 17 points, Muldrew added 15, and Hartley with 11 in defeat.
On Friday, the Eclipse will play the Glow as the Gold Rush will face the Rhythm in the Music City.
