The United States government appears to have gotten involved in the efforts to bring WNBA star Brittney Griner home from Russia.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) spoke this week with TMZ and revealed that the U.S. Department of State is working on Griner’s release.

“I’m very much worried about her and the other Americans caught up in Russia,” Graham said of Griner. “We need to put all the pressure we can to make sure this young lady comes home. I know the State Department’s involved [with Griner’s case].”

The Phoenix Mercury center was detained in Russia on drug charges following an incident at a Moscow airport. She is facing a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years, according to reports.

One of Griner’s teammates recently revealed something concerning about Griner’s detention. Now it looks like the U.S. government has officially stepped in to try to assist Griner.
