By now we all know that former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes is not a fan of Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, so naturally when Clark was named Time’s Athlete of the Year, it wouldn’t go unnoticed by Swoopes.
On the Gil’s Arena podcast, she shared her thoughts about Clark being named Athlete of the Year.
“I don’t think I’m surprised,” said Swoopes. “I’m curious to know who the other candidates were. But the fact that that’s the very first WNBA player to ever win TIME Magazine Athlete of the Year is pretty special.”
But then she questions Time’s criteria about making Clark their choice.
“My question is, like, the criteria… is it based off of her performance on the court? Yes, she had a great year. Or is it more about the impact that she had on the game this season?”
Then Swoopes suggested whom she thought she had been on the cover.
“You could put A’ja Wilson in there,” she suggested. She also brought up LeBron James, Katie Ledecky, and Simone Biles.
Wilson is the face of the WNBA but Clark’s impact on the league cannot be ignored which includes winning WNBA Rookie of the Year, which is probably why she received the honor.
