Skylar Diggins Addresses Unfortunate Chicago Sky Decision

The Chicago Sky announced on Tuesday that Skylar Diggins will be out for the remainder of the season. The seven-time All-Star will miss Chicago’s last four games of the campaign due to a nagging right knee injury.

Diggins signed a two-year, $1.86 million deal with the Sky in free agency. However, she was limited to 19 games in her first season in Chicago. The 5-foot-9 guard has been dealing with an injury in her right knee, which underwent meniscus surgery in October last year.

When healthy, Diggins has been a key player for Chicago. She’s averaged 14.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.4 triples in 29.1 minutes per contest.

“I hadn’t been feeling like myself out there,” Diggins said. “After we reevaluated, we just decided to scale back and shut it down for the season.”

Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca offered the organization’s “full support” for Diggins, emphasizing the need to prioritize the veteran’s health. “Skylar made a strong effort to get back to the court this season. She’s been in constant communication with us through the entire process,” the high-ranking team executive said.

It will be a very interesting offseason for Diggins, who turned 36 in August. She is still under contract with the Sky through 2027, and the six-time All-WNBA said that she believes she still has a “future with this organization.”

“I haven’t expressed any desire to not talk about me in a Chicago Sky uniform next year,” Diggins said.

The Sky currently have a 15-25 record and have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Their next game after the league-wide FIBA World Cup break will be on Sept. 17 at home against the Washington Mystics.
