Sliding New York Liberty Pummeled By Phoenix 3-Point Barrage

Maybe New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello will need to come up with some different plans for her players. The Liberty have now lost four of their last five games, including a 106-91 defeat to the  Phoenix Mercury.

Now it wasn't all due to Brondello's lack of defensive schemes. The Mercury were just hitting three-pointers all night long on Friday, June 27. In fact, Phoenix nailed 18 from behind the arc, stacking those on top of 17 made in their previous game against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky.

That sets a WNBA record for most three-pointers in two games with 35. There was no way for the Liberty to keep the Mercury from hitting those long-range bombs.

Breanna Stewart's 17 points led the Liberty, but wasn't enough against hot-shooting Phoenix

Breanna Stewart did her part for New York, now 11-4 on the season. Stewart scored 17 points. Nyara Sabally, who was playing in her first start against her sister Satou Sabally, posted a career-high 16 points and Natasha Cloud added 15.

It was Phoenix who kicked off New York's recent skid, beating the Liberty 89-81 at Barclays Center eight days ago.

Satou had the hottest hand of all for Phoenix. She scored 25 points, according to The Associated Press

The Mercury held a commanding 61-43 lead over the Liberty at halftime. Stewart only had five first-half points before picking up the pace. She went on a six-point scoring binge, getting New York within 68-61. But Phoenix kept on hitting three-pointers, putting a dagger in any comeback hopes for the Liberty.

Brondello will go back to the drawing board, hopefully finding a way to get the Liberty back on the winning track again.
