Indiana Fever teammates Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark were back together on Wednesday as Cunningham caddied for Clark at the pro-am preceding THE ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican Golf Club.
The two WNBA stars are on the mend following season-ending injuries that limited their playing time together in Cunningham's first season with the Fever.
Clark averaged 16.5 points per game in 13 games played, while Cunningham put up 8.6 points per game in 30 regular season contests with Indiana in 2025.
Clark told Golf Channel that she is feeling "100 percent" after her groin injury, preparing for a return to the court in 2026.
It is a future that Cunningham would like to be part of, but the free agent's latest comments about her potential return to the Fever next season were laced with doubt.
"She’s a phenomenal player, generational player, and I think everyone sees that," Cunningham said of Clark on Wednesday, per Golfweek's Beth Ann Nichols.
Cunningham, 29, highlighted Clark's ability to "elevate" the rest of the team, expressing her desire to run it back with the Fever next year.
"We missed her out on the court this year, but depending on the CBA and what’s going on hopefully we’re all together again," Cunningham said.
The most existential threat to Cunningham's wish to play a full season with Clark is the possibility of a lockout. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players' union was set to expire on Oct. 31, but the two sides agreed on a one-month extension in hopes of negotiating a new deal.
Most players who are not on rookie contracts, including Cunningham, are free agents this offseason. WNBA teams cannot make roster decisions until a new CBA is signed and there are rules in place regarding roster size, salary cap and minimum contracts.
Once the status of the 2026 WNBA season is more clear, Cunningham's stated desire to return to the Fever will be put to the test. In her exit interview last month, she admitted that she "can’t just not look at other opportunities" in free agency.
