Sophie Cunningham Doesn’t Hold Back on WNBA’s Cathy Engelbart Over Caitlin Clark Drama

The WNBA found itself at the center of controversy on Tuesday after Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier openly criticized league leadership. Collier did not mince words when addressing Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, accusing her of making dismissive remarks about the league’s brightest young star, Caitlin Clark.

According to Collier, Engelbert told players in a private meeting that Clark and others should be “grateful” for the endorsements and attention they receive because of the WNBA. The comments struck a nerve, with Collier calling the league’s governance “the worst leadership in the world” and highlighting what she sees as a disconnect between players and the commissioner (h/t ESPN’s Malika Andrews).

The fallout quickly spread throughout the entire league as players, fans and analysts rallied in support of Collier. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham amplified the criticism through Instagram, taking direct aim at Engelbert’s leadership.

“People only know Cathy because of C…,” Cunningham wrote in response to a post quoting the alleged remarks.

She added: “She’s the most delusional leader our league has seen. AND IT SHOULDN’T EVER BE ABOUT OUR COMMISSIONER IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

Her sharp words come amid increased frustration from fans who have long argued that Clark has not received adequate support or protection from the league despite being the face of its current growth.

It is also not the first time Cunningham has stepped up in defense of Clark. In July, she called out critics who downplayed Clark’s impact, insisting that her arrival had transformed the WNBA’s visibility and reach (via Show Me Something podcast).

That willingness to speak out has earned Cunningham respect among Indiana fans who feel the league needs stronger voices from within to hold leadership accountable.

The larger picture is one of growing tension between players and the WNBA front office. With record-breaking attendance and TV ratings fueling unprecedented growth, many believe Engelbert’s approach risks alienating the very athletes driving that success. Collier’s and Cunningham’s comments have shone a spotlight on the fractures within the league just as collective bargaining discussions loom — and fans continue to demand change at the highest levels.
