Sophie Cunningham Gets Honest About Future With Indiana Fever

Last offseason, Sophie Cunningham became a member of the Indiana Fever through a historic four-team trade involving the Phoenix Mercury, Dallas Wings, and Connecticut Sun, making it the largest trade in WNBA history.

Amber Cox, the Fever’s general manager, described Cunningham as a “perfect fit” for the team’s envisioned playing style, as reported by Chloe Peterson of the Indianapolis Star.

The veteran guard quickly proved her value, serving as a tough enforcer and dependable reserve for Indiana.

During her debut season with the Fever, Cunningham posted averages of 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 steal per game, starting in 13 contests. However, her season was cut short in August due to a right MCL tear that required surgical intervention, sidelining her for the playoffs.

Currently, Cunningham is not only focused on recovering from her injury but also navigating the uncertainties of free agency, having played her first year with the Fever on a one-year, $100,000 contract extension. While she continues her rehabilitation with support from the Fever, her status with the team remains unclear.

“Technically, I’m not signed to Indiana,” Cunningham said on her “Show Me Something” podcast, discussing her current situation.

Cunningham continued forward, providing more details about her current WNBA and health status.

“So, I’m still working with them up to a certain point and then if I re-sign, then I can continue to work with them. But I have Frank out here who’s doing it and then Todd and Maria are doing it back in Indiana.”

Cunningham’s future with the Fever is uncertain, and it remains to be seen whether the team will re-sign her. Notably, Indiana’s star player, Caitlin Clark, voiced her hope to “run it back” with Cunningham after the season concluded.

With only three players currently under contract for the 2026 season, the Fever face challenging roster decisions as they plan for the future.
