Sophie Cunningham didn't pull any punches following the Indiana Fever's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday night.
The Fever knew they were facing an uphill challenge from the moment Caitlin Clark was ruled out with a groin injury. That being said, the Sparks haven't exactly been impressive season. They entered Thursday's game with an underwhelming 4-11 record.
With Thursday's loss in the books, the Fever have fallen to 7-8 on the season. That's not what fans expected to see from Indiana in Year 2 of the Caitlin Clark era. On the bright side, things can't get much worse for Stephanie White's squad.
"The good news is we're not gonna peak too early, so I mean that's a positive," Cunningham told reporters. "It's not an excuse. Everyone's playing a back-to-back, everyone has this kind of rough schedule. For us, it's another opportunity tomorrow, and we've got to capitalize on it."
Cunningham also made an interesting remark about the Fever's dynamic behind the scenes.
During Thursday's postgame press conference, Cunningham admit players have their "own islands" within the locker room. She claims she'll do a better job of getting everyone to be on the same page.
"We are circled on everybody's schedule. No one likes us, right? So everyone in our locker room, that's the only type of people that we have that we can lean on. We have got to stay disciplined, we have to stay focused, we need to get consistent, and we got to lean on each other. And I think we've kind of wavered on that. We have our own islands. As one of the leaders of the team, I got to do a better job of grouping people."
Some fans are convinced Cunningham was throwing shade at a few teammates, albeit we're not exactly sure who the target is.
The Fever already turned heads this week by waiving DeWanna Bonner. Perhaps they'll make another change to their roster before the weekend arrives.
