Sophie Cunningham spoke openly about how opponents have been defending Caitlin Clark. The Indiana Fever guard said other teams are targeting Clark and criticized WNBA officials for not doing enough to protect one of the league’s biggest stars.

Cunningham shared her opinion on the latest episode of her podcast, Show Me Something. She talked about the physical treatment Clark has received this season, especially after Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury. Cunningham said the league needs to do more to protect players like Clark.

She was referring to a play where Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas pushed her fist into Clark’s neck during Indiana’s 111-109 loss. The referees did not call a foul or review the play during the game. Clark later left the game with a back injury. After the game, the WNBA upgraded the play to a flagrant foul and suspended Thomas for one game.

Officials Continue To Ignore Hard Fouls On Clark

Cunningham said neither she nor her teammates realized what happened during the game. She insisted the Fever would have responded if they had seen the incident unfold.

“During real-time … I did not see that happen,” Cunningham said (video here; warning: viewer discretion advised). “None of our team saw it happen because, I promise you, if we would have seen that happen, we would have had her back.”

She added that Clark deals with similar treatment almost every game.

“Unfortunately, this type of s--- happens every single game to her and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing about it.”

When her co-host, West Wilson, warned that those comments could lead to a fine, Cunningham stood by her position. She argued that the available video supports her claims.

“You see the videos of, like, literally kneeing and [giving Clark a cheap shot] in the throat. If she did that to any of our teammates, we would be pi--ed. They are definitely targeting her and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her.”

Cunningham joined several prominent basketball voices who have questioned how officials handle contact against Clark. Fever coach Stephanie White called Clark’s treatment “absolutely unacceptable” after the game. WNBA legend Lisa Leslie also said the league “has to do better.”

Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts disagreed with the league’s decision to suspend Thomas. He called the one-game suspension “extremely disappointing” and argued that the WNBA did not conduct a thorough investigation before reaching its decision.

The latest controversy came only days after another physical meeting between Indiana and Phoenix. That game featured six technical fouls and one ejection, with Clark again at the center of the action.

Clark missed Saturday’s game because of her back injury. She hopes to return when the Fever play again on July 5. That game also brings another Mercury game, setting the stage for another closely watched contest.
