Sophie Cunningham has had a couple of run-ins with the WNBA law this season. In the first episode of her brand-new “Show Me Something” podcast, the Indiana Fever star revealed that she got slapped with a $900 fine after being ejected for a heated incident in their win against the Connecticut Sun on June 17.
The 28-year-old was then fined another $500 over a viral TikTok video wherein Cunningham took a jab at WNBA referees.
Right now, Cunningham could be facing punishment again after another unfiltered rant against the game officials.
Cunningham had a few things to say about the referees during Wednesday’s episode of her podcast. According to the outspoken veteran, game officials need to do better.
"If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time," she said. "I'm not saying that your job is easy. But when it is a a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing?”
Cunningham then touched on the fact that she’s been fined multiple times this season.
"They're just so inconsistent. That's my thing," she continued. "Like, if you're on the other team and you're going to be fining the (expletive) out of me, cool. But let me do it to you. Yeah. You know what I mean?”
The Fever star wasn’t done expressing her brutally honest opinion on WNBA referees. According to Cunningham, co-players and fans alike share her sentiments about the officiating.
"I think that's players across the league and new fans across the country. Everyone's like, 'What is going on with refs?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.'
"And you fining me $500 is not going to do (expletive)."
Cunningham’s co-host on her podcast, reality TV star West Wilson, was moved by the Fever guard’s unapologetic statement on her fine. So much so that Wilson suggested that Cunningham put that line on a shirt.
The 6-foot-1 guard was open to the idea, although she acknowledged that it would almost certainly lead to more fines from the league.
"And then I'll get fined for that,” she said. “And then I'll get fined for this. And then the fines continue."
Cunningham did not confirm that she intends to go through with the T-shirt plan as proposed by her co-host. At the same time, however, she did not count it out entirely.
Given how much reach Cunningham has, it would not be surprising if this most recent rant somehow reaches the WNBA. The fact that she was fined $500 for a TikTok video does not rule out the possibility that she will get sanctioned again after this most recent tirade.
