Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has made her first public post following a scary ankle injury during a preseason win against the Atlanta Dream.
The injury happened in the third quarter of Saturday’s game, just one week before the team’s regular season opener.
Cunningham hurt her right ankle while going for a rebound and landed on Dream forward Rhyne Howard’s foot. She limped off the court and did not return.
The Fever later listed her as “doubtful” to return, though head coach Stephanie White shared after the game, “She keeps saying, ‘I’ll be fine.’ So I trust her.”
Fans had been worried about the severity of the injury, but Cunningham took to TikTok hours after the game to show she was in good spirits.
In the video, she sipped coffee while lip-syncing empowering words from rapper Nicki Minaj: “Shoutout to all my ambitious women in the world making their own money. Make some [explicit] noise for yourself.”

The clip ended with a highlight of Cunningham making a three-pointer.
Cunningham had just started her first game with the Fever after being traded from the Phoenix Mercury during the offseason. She was placed in the starting lineup in place of DeWanna Bonner and made an impact quickly.
In a previous game against the Washington Mystics, Cunningham scored 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists, earning high praise from Coach White, who called her “a dawg” and “a competitor.”
Against the Dream, Cunningham played 15 minutes before her injury, scoring five points and two rebounds.
Though the team walked away with an 81-76 win, the injury cast a shadow over the game. However, Cunningham’s social media post was a relief to fans. It not only showed her lighthearted side but also suggested she is mentally ready to bounce back.
The Indiana Fever now turn their attention to their season opener on May 17, when they will host the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Fever fans will be watching closely to see if Cunningham is back on the court and ready to go.
