Sophie Cunningham Reveals Internal Disagreements Within Phoenix Mercury

Sophie Cunningham has been in the WNBA since 2019. She was the 13th overall pick in the second round of that year’s draft.

The 6-foot-1 guard started her career with the Phoenix Mercury. However, her former team is in hot water over recent events.

Cunningham, now with the Indiana Fever, has faced the Mercury twice this season. They won their first matchup but lost the second one.

In the loss, Caitlin Clark and Alyssa Thomas were caught in an altercation. The Phoenix forward drove her fist into Clark’s throat while she was falling. After the game, the Mercury posted a stick-figure drawing that appeared to mock the Fever star in a now-deleted post.

Cunningham recently learned about this post from the Mercury and said she had no idea about the post. The eight-year veteran then shared an intriguing aspect about her former team.

“You know what's funny, though?” Cunningham said in a recent episode of the “Show Me Something” podcast. “I know people in their own organization. Nobody likes their team this year. They say that they are the unfriendliest group.

“So, we're not the only ones that feel that way. Internal people feel that way, too.”

The 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Champion spent six years with the Mercury. So, it’s not unlikely that she does have inside intel on what’s happening within the organization. As always, she's not afraid to spill the beans.

Cunningham and the Fever next face the Mercury on July 9 when they travel to the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix.
