Sophie Cunningham Says Brittney Griner's Reputation Is Misleading

From 2019 to 2024, Sophie Cunningham and 10-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner were teammates on the Phoenix Mercury. So it should be no surprise that she has a different opinion on Griner from most of Griner’s critics.

In a recent podcast appearance, Cunningham declared that Griner’s reputation is worse than she deserves. She described Griner as “down to earth,” “country,” and “chill” while calling her “the coolest person you will ever meet.”

“Brittney Griner gets the worst rap. She is the coolest person you will ever meet, swear to God. She’s down to earth, she’s country, just chill. She’s the best,” Cunningham said.

The only criticism she had wasn’t of Griner herself, but of some of the people that work security for her. Cunningham recalled an instance where they were being swarmed at an airport and one of the security people carrying Griner’s Louis Vuitton bags accidentally smashed her in the nose while trying to get people away.

“There was one guy who was kind of our security. He was carrying her Louis Vuitton bags, and when he ran to push people away, he threw the bags, and it came back and cracked me right in the nose,” Cunningham said.

“I was like, ‘Damn, I was trying to help, but I just get cracked by a $5,000 bag right in my schnoz.’ Black eye the next day. It was great.”

Griner and Cunningham

As much as some fans of Cunningham and critics of Griner may want the two to hate each other, that simply isn’t the case. Back in September, activist Riley Gaines revealed after attending a game between their teams that the two clearly still like each other and have remained friends in spite of their obvious political differences.

“I think most people would have thought that Sophie and Brittney Griner wouldn’t like each other. Kind of cool because I watched Brittney Griner and Sophie Cunningham like really embrace each other and have kind of like an intimate moment where clearly words were exchanged,” Gaines said in September.

So while fans can continue to project their own beliefs onto Cunningham or Griner with impunity, the fact of the matter is that the two WNBA players still think the world of each other in spite of the controversy that surrounds them.
