Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham gave birth to a new meme after a heated in-game moment involving Phoenix Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner.
Cunningham and Bonner were teammates on the Fever for a brief period last season. This was before the latter left the team mid-season for personal reasons, ultimately resulting in Indiana waiving her contract.
There was clearly no love lost between the two when the Fever hosted the Mercury at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Monday. Cunningham got involved after Bonner got into it with Caitlin Clark. Cuningham pointed at Bonner and refused to back down as the latter fumed over the disrespectful gesture.
In a recent episode of her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham shared her side of the story.
According to Cunningham, it all started when she asked the referee about Clark’s technical foul over her tussle with Bonner. Cunningham argued that the Phoenix forward should have gotten one, too. Bonner did not take well to that at all.
“[Bonner] is the one that did something extra, and then Caitlin got the tech,” Cunningham explained. “So I walked out there, and I was literally talking to the ref. … I was like, ‘Caitlin got one. But why didn’t [Bonner] get one?’ Because if Caitlin’s gonna get one, then she should have got one. It shouldn’t have been one or the other.”
“I was just kind of pointing, and [Bonner] is like, ‘Don’t you point at me.’ I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that.’ And I didn’t say a word.”
Cunningham admitted that the pointing gesture was “the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.” However, she was enjoying herself too much to pull back and reverse course at that point.
“I think it’s dumb, but it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself,” Cunningham continued. “I could not. She was losing her s***, and all I was doing was literally pointing.”
Sophie on her viral pointing meme:
She asked why only CC got a tech and not DB… who didn’t like being pointed. Sophie said “oh you shouldn’t have said that” & continued to silently point at her.

The Fever and the Mercury split their back-to-back matchups. After Indiana secured an 86-77 win on Monday, Phoenix got its revenge with a 111-109 victory two days later.
These two teams will face off again in Phoenix on July 2, and all eyes will be on Cunningham and Bonner.
