Sophie Cunningham's Official Statement After Fever Move

Sophie Cunningham is back with the Indiana Fever, at least for another year.

There were initial concerns about Cunningham's future with the Fever this 2026 offseason. As an unrestricted free agent, the 29-year-old guard previously hinted that she was looking for a "bigger contract," meaning an increased salary and a long-term deal.

Considering that Indiana had several free agents, with Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston and Makayla Timpson the only players under contract after the 2025 campaign, it was uncertain if the team could actually bring her back.

Fortunately, Cunningham agreed to return to the Fever on a one-year deal. The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steal in 30 games played for Indiana last season. She was also sensational for the team in the Commissioner's Cup championship, during which she tallied 13 points and seven rebounds in a 74-59 win.

That being said, her return is a massive boost to an Indiana team looking to create some continuity and build from their success in 2025. The team made it all the way to the semifinals, losing only to the eventual champions, the Las Vegas Aces.

Cunningham, for her part, has a good reason for deciding to run it back with the Fever. In a statement released following her signing, she expressed belief that they can have another "special season" after the challenges they overcame together in the past year.

"We had a really special group last year and it was an incredible first season for me in Indy; I loved everything about my teammates and the Fever organization," Cunningham stated.

"We fought through a ton of adversity, and it was important to me that we have a chance to see through what we started. I have a feeling this is going to be another special season, so I’m excited to get things started and to, of course, keep playing in front of the best fans in the WNBA. Let’s get spicy!"

Aside from Cunningham, the Fever have re-signed star guard Kelsey Mitchell, key cog Lexie Hull and reliable big Damiris Dantas. They have also added free agents Monique Billings and Ty Harris.

It remains to be seen who else the Fever will add in free agency, although they still have a clear need in the frontcourt. They could also use some depth behind Mitchell at the guard position.
