Sparks’ Kelsey Plum shrugs off trade rumors

Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum said on Thursday that she is not taking trade speculation or rumors personally as the WNBA trade deadline approaches.

“The thing about professional sports is it’s business,” Plum told reporters, via ESPN. “At the end of the day, people have to do what’s best for them, and I respect that. And I’m not taking anything personal. For me, I’m going to be where my feet are.”

The five-time All-Star, who has been sidelined since June 21 with a lower left leg injury, participated in practice and plans to return on Sunday against the Portland Fire. That contest tips off at 3:00 p.m. ET, which comes 30 minutes after the WNBA’s trade deadline.

“I play for the Sparks, so on Sunday, I’m going to suit up and I’m going to give them whatever minute restriction, fill-the-blank-in minutes of hell, coming off the bench,” Plum said. “I’m actually really excited about it.”

Plum is averaging career highs of 23.9 points and 6.4 assists in 12 games this season. The Sparks (10-17) have struggled without her and sit in the midst of a six-game losing streak.

Los Angeles has reportedly fielded interest in deals for Plum, who is set for free agency after the season, but the team’s asking price has deterred potential suitors. Golden State has been mentioned as a possible destination, yet the Valkyries are reluctant to surrender key contributors.

Plum declined to discuss her long-term future beyond focusing on the present.
