On August 1, after more than a year of recovery from surgery to repair a torn ACL in her knee, Cameron Brink made her long-awaited return to the court for the Los Angeles Sparks.
It was a long and tedious road for the 23-year-old after her rookie season was cut short after just 15 games due to a knee injury that has had a significant impact on the start of her WNBA career.
At this point, however, Brink is just glad to be back doing what she loves.
Brink spoke honestly about her injury comeback during a recent episode of her podcast, “Straight to Cam.” The 6-foot-4 forward expressed her excitement after being out for an extended period, but Brink also could not help but feel some regret after her first couple of games.
"I'm back on the court ... I feel good," she said. "The basketball player in me, though, is already thinking about what I wanted to do better. I'm like, I wish I was more aggressive. Should've done, you know. Should have handled this ball screen better.
"I was very emotional. It was certainly nerve-wracking. Just still figuring out the pace of game day, getting used to when taping is, when I'm on court.”
Her co-host on the show, Sydel Curry-Lee, doubled down on Brink’s competitive fire. Curry-Lee, who is the sister of Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry and the wife of NBA free agent Damion Lee, said that she knows Brink would not have been satisfied unless the Spark star was able to score a thousand points in her return.
Brink agreed with the assessment, which just proves that she would have found an unsatisfactory aspect in her game regardless of how well she played.
The Sparks have been cautious in bringing Brink back into the mix, which is completely understandable considering how long she was sidelined.
She came off the bench in the two games she's played, averaging 6.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in 13.0 minutes per contest.
In the 15 appearances last season, Brink logged 21.9 minutes a game. It should only be a matter of time before she gets her usual workload back, but for now, she must remain patient and trust the process.
