Stephanie White Sounds Off on WNBA Star Who Broke Caitlin Clark’s Record

Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever looked to end their three-game road trip in the win column, taking on Alyssa Thomas and the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday as the 2025 WNBA season nears its end.

Thomas is a proven veteran in the league, spending her first 11 seasons with the Connecticut Sun, including two under White. But with White's departure to join Caitlin Clark in Indiana over the offseason, the Sun elected to trade Thomas to Phoenix.

Thomas hasn’t disappointed with her new team, averaging 15.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 9.2 assists per game and helping secure a spot in the playoffs. She also broke the WNBA record for most points assisted in a single season, passing Clark’s 2024 mark of 751.

Ahead of Tuesday's Fever vs. Mercury matchup, White took to the podium for a pregame press conference. When asked what makes Thomas so unique to game plan against, White had nothing but praise for her former player.

“I mean, a couple of things," White said. "One, she’s a point guard in a power forward's body. I mean, she’s got a point guard mentality. She anticipates really well. Her passes are always on time, on target. They’re right on the money. And she’s got the physicality of a big and the ball handling of a guard as well.

"So, I think the hard thing about AT is that she’s so smart. She knows how to read so well that you’ve got to mix up the looks. You've got to try to keep her off balance as much as you can. But she anticipates just as well offensively as she does defensively. And so that makes it really tough.”

During their two seasons in Connecticut together, White and Thomas made it to the semifinals on both occasions. Now, White, like Thomas already has, will look to lock up a postseason spot for the Fever, even though Clark's status remains up in the air.
