Washington Mystics star Sonia Citron has been a reliable backup point guard for Team USA despite her limited minutes in the FIBA World Cup. In the group stage, she has averaged 4.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 10.5 minutes per game.
Citron’s best game in the tournament so far came against Czechia on Monday. She tallied 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, along with seven rebounds and two assists to help the USA national team secure a 105-64 victory. She had the second-best efficiency rating on the team, behind only Breanna Stewart.
The Mystics guard also produced one of the more remarkable plays in the game when she scored off a Caitlin Clark assist in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
After receiving the pass from Clark, Citron fooled her opponent with a fake from the 3-point line. She proceeded to get closer to the basket before pulling up for a mid-range jump shot.
FIBA even shared a slow-motion video of the play, showing Citron perfectly drain her shot despite Czechia’s Eliska Joklova trying to block her.
Aside from posting the clip, FIBA also gave Citron a new nickname to further highlight her play.
“Sonia Citruns – may we call – as the jumper is so juicy?” FIBA wrote in the caption of its post.
For what it’s worth, Citron isn’t the only Team USA player who has gotten a nickname from FIBA amid the World Cup. Paige Bueckers received the “Middy P” nickname from the tournament, thanks to her incredible mid-range shooting.
Furthermore, FIBA called Angel Reese the “Queen of Boards” after her nine boards in their opener against China.
As the competition progresses, it will certainly be interesting to see what other nicknames FIBA will come up with for the Team USA stars.
