After the disappointing loss to the Liberty in the season opener, the Las Vegas Aces came out with a purpose, scorching the Connecticut Sun 87-62. They are now 1-1 to start the season.
In the first quarter, the Aces got back to playing their brand of basketball. Jackie Young came right away and drove in for a layup with to give the Aces an early lead 2-0.
A’ja Wilson gave the Aces a quick 4-0 lead with a step back jump shot.
Early in the second, the Aces kept the momentum to go up 26-17 with Dana Evans sinking a jump shot with 8:42 left in half.
At the half, the Aces lead the Sun, 52-29.
In the third quarter, the Aces came out on all cylinders with a big three-point bucket by Jewell Loyd. Loyd finished the game with 20 points and went 7-for-14 from the floor.
Off a jump ball tip, A’ja Wilson made good on a lay-up down the court to give the Aces a commanding 65-35 lead with 4:47 left in the third quarter. To close out the quarter, the Aces were up 75-46 with Kierstan Bell firing a long-range three at the buzzer.
In the fourth quarter, the Sun tried to pick up the tempo to make a comeback, but the Aces stayed consistent on the court in getting to the charity stripe.
A’ja Wilson definitely brought her A-game against the Sun. This was A’ja Wilson’s second-straight game with a double-double. She finished the night with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and two blocks. Chelsea Gray came up big this game, she went for 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3-for-7 from the floor.
A’ja Wilson was asked how much better the defense in this game versus the game against the Liberty was. “It was better than the other night which is always good. I was pleased with it (defense) but not satisfied.”
The Las Vegas Aces begin their homestand on Friday, May 23 against the Washington Mystics at 10pm ET/7pm PT.
