The WNBA preseason kicked off on May 2, and continued this week, with three games on Tuesday’s slate. The Chicago Sky host the Indiana Fever, the Las Vegas Aces welcome the Phoenix Mercury, and the Golden State Valkyries greet the Los Angeles Sparks. The Valkyries vs. Sparks game arguably attracts the most attention as the Valkyries get ready for their inaugural season in the league. Here are the top 5 current WNBA coaches entering the 2025 NBA season.

Top 5 Current WNBA Coaches Entering 2025

The 2025 WNBA regular season will start with a four-game slate on May 14. But, for the time being, these are the top 5 current WNBA coaches entering 2025: Chicago Sky’s Tyler Marsh, Atlanta Dream’s Karl Smesko, Los Angeles Sparks’ Lynne Roberts, Indiana Fever’s Stephanie White, and Las Vegas Aces’ Becky Hammon.

Caitlin Clark took the Indiana Fever by storm. However, Indiana struggled with consistency during the 2024 WNBA season. Clark’s effort, talent, and presence helped the Fever advance to the WNBA Playoffs for the first time in seven years, but then-head coach Christie Sides was reportedly fired by the team.

Angel Reese shined during the Chicago Sky’s 2024 WNBA season. However, Chicago had a tough 2024 after finishing with a 13-27 record and missing the Playoffs for the first time in five years. All eyes will be on Marsh, as Marsh’s NBA coaching experience can come in handy. Along with high expectations to turn things around in Chicago.

Honorable Mentions

The WNBA’s head coaching vacancies have been filled, as there were previously eight open head coach openings. This upcoming season, there will be 7 female head coaches and 6 male head coaches in charge of their respective teams’ benches.

Dallas Wings Head Coach Chris Koclanes might not be on the radar, but Koclanes’ upcoming first season in Dallas should be interesting. Koclanes previously served as an assistant coach at USC, a defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Sparks, and a defensive coordinator for the Connecticut Sun. Koclanes’ extensive experience can work in the Wings’ favor. The Wings already acquired two veterans, DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith, this offseason to add depth to the lineup.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 regular season has been attracting attention from new and old fans alike. The WNBA’s new players, top teams, and record-breaking ratings add to the overall excitement towards the league. 2025 should be one of the best and biggest years of professional women’s basketball following the Caitlin Clark effect, which will likely continue to lead to more sellout games in the league.
