Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Martin has broken her silence amid growing criticism toward the WNBA expansion team following a series of tough roster cuts—including the release of Belgian guard Julie Vanloo.
Vanloo, who had just wrapped up a national team stint, reportedly flew nearly 18 hours back to San Francisco—only to be cut about an hour after she arrived. Fans weren’t happy, and backlash quickly followed online.
Kate Martin, however, offered some perspective. Speaking after a recent team practice, she acknowledged the harsh reality of the business, while backing the organization she plays for.
“We know basketball is a business, and I trust our front office, and I trust our coaching staff,” Martin said.
“Every single person who came in did exactly what they were supposed to do. Everyone who was gone for EuroBasket—we missed dearly. I’ve built strong friendships with those players. The girls that got cut or waived, we’re going to miss dearly.”
Martin, selected by Golden State in this year’s expansion draft from the Las Vegas Aces, has been an impactful bench piece this season, averaging 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Vanloo played in nine games before leaving for EuroBasket, putting up 6.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.7 rebounds per outing. The team also waived Chloe Bibby and Bree Hall to make room for returnees Janelle Salaun and Cecilia Zandalasini, both of whom were also away on international duty.
Despite the roster shakeups, the Valkyries are rolling. At 9-7, they currently sit sixth in the WNBA standings and have won seven of their last nine games.
Steph Curry finally caught his first live WNBA game in the Bay—and Kate Martin made sure it was a good one.
Curry was courtside for the Valkyries’ matchup against Seattle, and was even caught on camera hyped over a big play from Martin in the third quarter.
Martin finished with 11 points, 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 threes in 26 minutes off the bench. It was one of her strongest games of the season—and the Warriors star took notice.
Curry previously said he planned to support the Valkyries this season. After what he saw, he’ll probably be back for more.
