Phoenix Mercury legend Diana Taurasi got honest about how things have changed in the WNBA, particularly with how the league has viewed its dress code policies in the past years.
In an interview, Phoenix Mercury legend Diana Taurasi essentially confirmed that there was an unofficial dress code for the WNBA players back in the day. In fact, she even revealed that dressing up in a certain manner can lead to fines and penalties.
“Oh, it was official,” Taurasi said during a podcast interview that she guested in. “We used to get fined, if we had ripped jeans on. On road trips you had to be dressed in slacks and penny loafers and a button up.”

She also revealed that she was able to evade the penalties by asking for business class flights from the league every time they are asked to dress in a specific way.
The inquiry came after Sue Bird hinted on the WNBA having an unofficial dress code back then.
Sue Bird has been a vocal advocate for self-expression in the WNBA, particularly when it comes to fashion and dress codes. Over the years, she has helped push the league toward a more relaxed and player-driven approach to style. Bird has spoken about how, early in her career, WNBA players often felt pressure to conform to traditional gender norms in their attire.
However, as the league evolved, she embraced a more androgynous and streetwear-inspired look, helping to redefine what it means to be fashionable in professional women’s basketball.
WNBA legend Diana Taurasi recently expressed her honest opinion on Paige Bueckers, the overall first pick of this year’s draft. Bueckers had been a standout player during her time with the UConn Huskies, and is not spending her time as a rookie with the Dallas Wings.
“To see the maturation of Paige in those four-and-a-half years and what that kid went through with injuries and the expectations and the pressures of playing in Connecticut,” Taurasi said, per In Case You Missed It with Khristina Williams. “What a resilient, amazing human being she is. And to get to know a little bit more in the last couple of years, and she is not only one of the best basketball players I’ve ever seen play basketball, but she is one the best people.”
“And you know she can cultivate, galvanize a team and really tap into the best of her teammates, that skill, that skill is uncharted waters. So excited to see her play in the WNBA.”
This week, @DianaTaurasi returns to share what her first year away from the game has been like, her health journey, and what’s next. Then @Lucky_Lefty0 joins @Khristina to talk about finding joy in the game again and why this season feels different.
