'We Will Sign Someone': Curt Miller Says Dallas Wings in Talks to Fill Roster Spot Before Thursday

The Dallas Wings will sign a player before Thursday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, general manager Curt Miller confirmed Tuesday, following the release of two hardship signees and a trade that opened up a 12th roster spot.

“Yes. We will sign someone before Thursday’s game,” Miller said. “We are in those discussions currently. Look forward to bringing that person in.”

The Wings had a light crew available for Monday’s practice. Paige Bueckers returned after a one-game absence, but Arike Ogunbowale (hand) was out. Additionally, Myisha Hines-Allen could not finish practice, and DiJonai Carrington (rib) partially participated again. With Tyasha Harris (knee) out for the season and Maddy Siegrist (knee) sidelined for an extended period, additional injuries add up.

Miller noted the urgency of the decision amid Dallas’ ongoing injury situation.

“We may need them,” he added. “We’re in the range of potential forfeit with how many injuries we have and what they will or will not allow you to play with. So we need that 12th roster spot signed, and we anticipate that before Thursday.”

The Wings waived guards Haley Jones and Kaila Charles from their hardship contracts after Teaira McCowan and Luisa Geiselsöder returned from national team duty at EuroBasket. They also traded forward NaLyssa Smith to the Las Vegas Aces in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick, freeing up another roster slot while consolidating the frontcourt.

Miller stressed that the Wings are already communicating about the open roster spot with a specific player. While no official signing has been announced, his comments signaled that the team has moved quickly to address the void and avoid falling below the WNBA’s minimum player threshold.

Dallas has dealt with injury absences for much of the season, fielding short-handed lineups and navigating multiple hardship contracts. But with McCowan and Geiselsöder now back and Li Yueru emerging as a rotation piece, the Wings’ frontcourt has stabilized. Perimeter depth remains thinner, prompting the upcoming move.

“We’re not just adding to add,” Miller said. “We’re trying to stay competitive while continuing to build toward the future.”

Dallas has won four of its last six games and is showing signs of progress following a difficult start to the season. The team returns to practice on Wednesday before hosting the Phoenix Mercury at College Park Center on Thursday.
