The 2025 WNBA season hasn’t exactly started the way Paige Bueckers probably dreamed. The No. 1 overall pick is still winless as a pro after the Dallas Wings dropped their first four games—tying them at the bottom of the standings with the Connecticut Sun.
What’s even more concerning is how this slow start feels like déjà vu for Dallas fans. Last year’s squad finished 9-31, and the early-season struggles suggest that the rebuild is still very much in progress.
Through it all, Bueckers has held her own. The former UConn standout is averaging 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in her opening stretch—a balanced stat line that shows she’s impacting the game even while adjusting to the pace and pressure of the W.
In an interview with the Dallas Hoops Journal, Bueckers kept it real about the learning curve, especially in her role as a floor general.
“I can do a better job of getting our team organized just in transition and what we want our flow to look like,” she said. “Getting into first actions, and if we don’t get something in the first action, creating looks into second action.”
She continued, “Getting a better flow and sense of where everybody needs to be. We’re all learning and we’re all learning each other’s tendencies—where we like the ball, where to go after a cut, and stuff like that.”
Only three players from last year’s team returned this season, and that level of turnover comes with growing pains. Bueckers acknowledged that the Wings are still figuring things out—on the court and in the locker room—with communication and patience key to their development.
Tuesday’s game against the Sun in Connecticut is shaping up to be more than just another regular-season matchup. For Bueckers, it’s her first time playing back in Connecticut since leading the Huskies to a national title, and now she’s coming back in a Wings uniform.
“It’s another game in the long WNBA schedule,” she told Dallas Hoops Journal. “It’s in an environment that I’m accustomed to and comfortable with. It’s another game to grow and get better with the Dallas Wings.”
“I have some great memories here,” she added. “I don’t think we lost here in my UConn career, so we’ll try to carry those vibes over to this game and approach it with a winning mentality.”
Both teams are hungry for their first win. For Bueckers, this one’s personal.
