Golden State Valkyries guard Kate Martin has arguably had a better week than Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, but a Valkyries announcer got immediate pushback when he tried to rewrite their Iowa Hawkeyes history on the air.
Clark is in the middle of a serious shooting slump, going 1-for-23 from 3-point range over the past three games, which included an 88-77 loss to Golden State last week.
Meanwhile, Martin recorded her career high of 21 points in the Valkyries' game against the New York Liberty on Wednesday, a contest the Liberty won 81-78.
As Martin lit up the defending WNBA champions, the announcer claimed that Martin "took over a lot of those games by herself" when she played with Clark, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer, at Iowa.
"Everybody knows Kate Martin because she played with Caitlin Clark at Iowa," the broadcaster said.
The Valkyries usual play-by-play announcer was not calling the game, but his replacement ruffled some feathers.
"But people forget some of the games that Caitlin didn't have it, especially in the tournament, which is where Kate Martin really made her name, Kate Martin took over a lot of those games by herself.”
I love Kate. But be so serious. https://t.co/EGMiv1Yt8A

"You need to stop," said an Iowa fan. "I love me some Kate Martin but you're glazing here."
"Just say whatever you want," complained one critic. "No one is gonna fact check you. The state of our country today."
The announcer seemed to be referencing the 2024 Big Ten Tournament final, when Martin hit a late 3-pointer in regulation and scored seven of her 13 points in overtime to help Iowa to a 94-89 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
In that game, Clark made the game-tying layup to send the game to overtime. She finished with 34 points and 12 assists.

Outside of that, it is hard to point to a Hawkeyes tournament game in which Martin came close to "taking over" from Clark during her 163-game career in Iowa City.
Clark played in 30 conference or NCAA Tournament games in her four seasons at Iowa and never scored fewer than 15 points. She scored more than Martin in all 30.
Martin has had Clark's number in the WNBA, though, with a 3-0 record against the Fever for the Valkyries and the Las Vegas Aces.
