WNBA commissioner issues statement on Diana Taurasi's retirement, thanks the legend 'for everything'

On Tuesday, Diana Taurasi, one of the greatest WNBA players of all time announced her retirement. The 42-year-old guard played with her entire career, 20 seasons, with the Phoenix Mercury.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued an official statement on the league's social media to celebrate her impact and acknowledge one of the sport's most dynamic competitors.

"Diana Taurasi is one of the greatest competitors to ever play the game of basketball on any stage. In a record-setting career that saw her play 20 seasons, score more points and make more three-point shots than any player in WNBA history, she has earned the unquestioned respect of players around the globe, delivered electrifying moments and captivated fans again and again. 

"On behalf of the WNBA family, I thank Diana for everything that she has brought to the WNBA — her passion, her charisma and, most of all, her relentless dedication to the game. She leaves a lasting legacy and the future of the WNBA is in a great position because of her impact, that will be felt for generations to come."

A three-time WNBA champion, two-time WNBA Finals MVP, 2009 WNBA MVP, 11-time WNBA All-Star and 10-time member of the All-WNBA First Team, Taurasi is a sure-fire lock for the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. 

A winner of six straight gold medals with Team USA, the UConn alumna retires as the all-time WNBA leader in points (10,646), field goals (3,341), free throws (2,517), 3-point field goals (1,447), regular season games (565) and seasons played (20) as well as the all-time playoff leader in points (1,455), field goals (478) and 3-point field goals (215).
