The Indiana Fever beat the defending champion Minnesota Lynx for the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup at Target Center, without Caitlin Clark, and with a whole lot of good playing from everyone. Minnesota played an OK first quarter, and basically lost it from there. Indiana recovered, found their rhythm and chemistry, and took advantage of Minnesota’s lackluster game.
It wasn’t that Minnesota started that way, but from the beginning of the second quarter, it was evident that it would be Indiana’s game. Unfortunately for Indiana, it didn’t count in the regular season standings. Fortunately for the Lynx, it didn’t count in the regular season standing. Not a good way to start off a home stretch, particularly with the Washington Mystics coming in on Thursday. Washington was loss No. 2 for Minnesota, and they are going to have to do a quick turn-around, regroup, and bring back the fire.
Was this game a reason for the Lynx for fans for that matter to worry? Not at all. They have come back from adversity before, and there is no reason to think they won’t again. It is also important to remember that it is not Clark and the Indiana Fever, but simply the Indiana Fever.
Every other player on the Fever deserves as much credit as Clark, and should not be shortchanged in the respect category. Indiana played a really good game, not a great game, but a game that makes them a legitimate contender. It must be noted though that the past Commissioner’s Cup winners have not won the WNBA championship. Just a little something to chew on.
The Indiana Fever head home for a game with the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, who have picked up some steam lately. The Lynx can lick their wounds and get ready for the Mystics on Thursday as well. Let’s see if the Fever has some momentum, and if the Lynx will bounce back.
And that, my friends, as they say, is that.’ — Martin Ruben.
