To say that the Indiana Fever are in a world of hurt right now would be a huge understatement.
Their cornerstone superstar, Caitlin Clark, has been seeing some progress in her road to recovery from a groin injury that has now cost her 16 consecutive games on the shelf. At this point, however, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year still has no timetable for her much-anticipated return.
The Fever also lost no less than three players to season-ending injuries during the span of two weeks. Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson are all done for the year, leaving Indiana with an extremely depleted backcourt.
WNBA icon Candace Parker is not standing by idly as she watches the Fever get decimated by injuries. In Wednesday’s episode of her “Post Moves” podcast with Indiana star Aliyah Boston, Parker addressed the Fever's unfortunate situation by calling for a big change in the WNBA.
"(Aerial) Powers is the 17th player to wear the Fever uniform this season," Parker said. "And no, the WNBA did not change the rules about roster sizes. This is actually the case—17th player on an 11-woman roster.
"Which is insane, and I think it goes back to the cry of like, expand the roster. Because if you have someone that is the next man up with all of these injuries, at least they're familiar with their offense."

There have been calls for the WNBA to expand the teams’ roster sizes amid the 44-game season schedule. Parker has made it clear that she supports this proposal, which is something she believes will help teams like the Fever address their injury woes.
It’s Indiana that has perhaps been the most injury-riddled team in the league this season. As Parker pointed out, the Fever have made six signings throughout the season on top of their 11-woman roster.
McDonald, Chloe Bibby, Odyssey Sims, Kyra Lambert, Shey Peddy and Powers have all been brought on as a response to the Fever’s injury crisis throughout the campaign. This team is hoping that they won’t need to sign anybody else from here on out.
Boston agreed with her co-host's claim. The three-time All-Star expounded on the notion that having an expanded roster means that teams would have reserve players on their squad who have already been ingrained in the system, as opposed to bringing in new recruits out of the blue.
Boston, however, also had nothing but high praise for her new teammates.
“Everyone that we’ve signed, no matter how late we signed them, have honestly just came in and just been ready and focused on what we do and just try to adjust the best they can,” Boston said. “Honestly, I think everyone’s just been doing a pretty great job.”
The next-woman-up mentality has been working relatively well for the Fever with new players stepping in and playing their respective roles. There’s no denying, however, that this team would benefit from a little bit more consistency in its roster, especially with the playoffs just around the corner.
