WNBA Makes Chicago Sky Decision After Indiana Fever Game

After a disappointing season for the Chicago Sky in 2024, the organization made several major moves in the offseason. The first of which was to replace Teresa Weatherspoon with first-time head coach Tyler Marsh.

The team's second order of business was finding a way to build around their young duo of star post players, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. This netted them with veteran guards like Courtney Vandersloot, Rebecca Allen and Ariel Atkins.

Despite a strong preseason in which the Sky took down the Minnesota Lynx, Chicago got off to a rough start in 2025. They got throttled by Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on opening night.

Losing 93 to 58 is a poor way to begin the season, and it calls into question the preparation that Coach Marsh and his team did leading up to the contest. Clark had her way with the Sky in a 20-point triple-double, outshining Reese and her 12-point, 17-rebound contribution.

Last week, the WNBA had Chicago ranked No. 8 in their preseason rankings. This means that they believed the Sky had what it took to make improvements this season and be a playoff team in 2025.

However, after just one game, the WNBA dropped the Sky down to No. 11 in their power rankings. This was the biggest drop of any team after opening weekend, and it indicates that the league no longer believes in Chicago as a playoff team.

Reese will need more help moving forward, as she led the team with 12 points. Only one other Sky was in double figures, and the team shot just 29.1% from the field.

No aspect of the game was particularly promising for Chicago, as they got dominated on both ends of the floor. They looked lost at times both offensively and defensively, and several players underperformed.

Fans have called for rookie guard Hailey Van Lith to play more, which may help the team crawl out of the league's cellar. She looked promising in her debut, albeit in unimportant minutes.

Chicago has plenty of work to do, and the season is still long. However, Marsh and the Sky need to figure things out before their May 22 contest against the Minnesota Lynx, because this season could slip away from them in a hurry.
