Why does Caitlin Clark not have an official backup as a point guard for the Indiana Fever? For one analyst, the more proper questions should be: does she even need one?
For WNBA analyst Steve Jones Jr., the reason why the Fever has yet to designate an official backup point guard for Caitlin Clark was simply because they don’t need to.
“You are asking someone to fulfill a very specific role, it’s like can we just let Kelsey run with some people?” Jones said in an episode of “The Ringer WNBA Show.”
“Can we just initiate through the bigs? I don’t know if they need one. I wouldn’t put that at the highest of their needs.”
Program host Seerat Sohi also chimed in with her own insights. With the recent acquisitions of Fever, the team may already have the firepower in their roster that they need, as well as people they can build around Clark.
“You have DeWanna Bonner, for example, playing a lot of minutes with the second unit or Kelsey Mitchell,” Sohi added. “Even Sophie Cunnigham, who is going to be coming off the bench, has some on-ball creation ability. You actually have really good playmaking at all positions with this team.”
Kelsey Mitchell just re-signed with the Indiana Fever last week for a guaranteed supermax deal worth $249,000 for the 2025 season. Shooting guard Sophie Cunningham, recently acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Mercury, can also fill in for Clark. Veteran DeWanna Bonner, with her strong dribbling and passing skills, provides another option.
With these things considered, Caitlin Clark already has all the backup that she would need.
In what could probably be the object of envy for a lot of fans, Caitlin Clark had the opportunity to get to know Taylor Swift, as well as her boyfriend Chief tight end Travis Kelce. In her recent panel appearance at the 2025 WIN for KC Women’s Sports Awards, Clark talked about the experience of getting to know the pop icon, and what she would request out of her.
“Taylor’s obviously amazing,” Clark said. “If you’ve ever been to a Taylor Swift concert, it takes away everything that’s going on in the real world. You’re in this arena having fun, and you don’t know all these people here, but you feel like you’re friends.”
Caitlin talking about Juju
“Ive talked to Juju a little bit. Obviously I kinda watch from a distance. Honestly more than anything I just try to be supportive. She doesnt need my help…As you can tell our entire scouting report number 12 thats all it’s about.” pic.twitter.com/aRoh4rS44d

“And that’s just what makes it a good time. And obviously, she’s just a very kind caring person, and you can really feel that.
“I wish she was still on tour,” Caitlin Clark added. “I’d still be going to the shows.”
