The Atlanta Dream carried an 18-11 record into Thursday evening's matchup against the Chicago Sky. The Sky were 8-21, fresh off a surprise double-digit win against the Washington Mystics that broke their eight-game losing streak.
Atlanta put them firmly back in the losing column with an 86-65 victory on Thursday, as they outscored Chicago by 27 points in the second half. All-Star guard Allisha Gray led the way for the Dream with 25 points, and Jordin Canada contributed 17 points and six assists.
The Dream have been without All-Star wing Rhyne Howard for roughly a month, and Brittney Griner has missed the last few games with an injury as well.
As a result of these players being sidelined, Atlanta signed veteran guard Kamiah Smalls to a seven-day contract. After the game against the Sky on Thursday evening, however, her contract expired, but the Dream decided to renew it for another seven days on Friday.
Smalls was a third-round pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft and has played in just 13 WNBA games, including three this season for Atlanta. She is yet to record any statistics, playing just one minute in each of the Dream's three consecutive blowout wins.
With critical games against the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm coming up in the next seven days, however, it is unlikely that Smalls will see the floor outside of a dire scenario for Atlanta.

Atlanta currently sits in third place in the league standings, which would give them home-court advantage through at least the first round of the playoffs. However, it is incredibly tight, as the Mercury have the same record.
The Indiana Fever, Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces are all within 3.0 games of the Dream as well, and there are still roughly 15 games left for teams to play. Plenty could happen in the final few weeks of the season before the playoffs arrive.
Beating the Mercury and Storm in their upcoming contests would pay dividends to the Dream as they fight for a solid position in the playoff picture.
