Four days before the Aug. 7 WNBA trade deadline, the Dallas Wings made headlines by trading DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx.

In order to complete the trade, Wings general manager Curt Miller had to make a tough call by waiving 6-foot-7 veteran center Teaira McCowan — less than two days after she was an important part of the rotation against the Indiana Fever.

Details of Wings-Lynx DiJonai Carrington Trade

Carrington, 27, had been the subject of trade rumors since the Wings traded her girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith, to the Aces on June 30.

Carrington posted a cryptic message on Instagram Saturday night, and shortly after, the deal was announced.

Minnesota Lynx receive:

  • DiJonai Carrington, guard

Dallas Wings receive:

  • Diamond Miller, forward
  • Karlie Samuelson, guard
  • 2027 second-round draft pick

Dallas Wings Release Teaira McCowan

Because they acquired an extra player in the trade, the Wings had to release a player to stay under the 12-player roster limit.

McCowan was their choice despite her owning a protected veteran contract. The former Mississippi State Bulldogs star is in the final year of her guaranteed three-year, $587,100 contract, with a salary of $201,400 this season.

The 6-foot-7 post, one of the tallest players in the WNBA, has not started a game for the Wings all year. Her averages of 12.9 minutes, 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game are career lows.

She had six points and three rebounds in 12 minutes in her last game against the Fever, an 88-78 loss. Indiana drafted her No. 3 overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft.
