WNBA to Punish Los Angeles Sparks Star After Ejection

The Los Angeles Sparks snapped a six-game skid with a 77-68 win over the Connecticut Sun on Saturday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all positive for the L.A. franchise.

Four players scored in double figures for the Sparks in the win, led by Rae Burrell who had an all-around performance with 20 points, two rebounds, two assists, three steals and three blocks.

Nneka Ogwumike added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Erica Wheeler tallied 11 points and five assists.

Dearica Hamby, for her part, recorded 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. The Sparks forward, however, could have added more to her tally had she not been ejected early in the fourth quarter.

Hamby was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter after she hit Sun forward Raegan Beers with an elbow to the face.

A Flagrant 2 foul warrants an automatic ejection. The WNBA rules also state that each flagrant point carries a $500 fine. A Flagrant 2 foul accounts for two flagrant points, which means Hamby is due to pay a $1,000 fine as a result of her actions.

It was Hamby’s first flagrant foul of the season. Unfortunately for her, the flagrant-point limit before a player gets suspended for one game is four.

That being said, Hamby certainly needs to be careful, as her next Flagrant 2 foul will not only get her ejected but also result in a suspension. A player who commits a Flagrant 2 foul after already accruing three flagrant points also gets suspended for two games.
