3 Intriguing WWE Storylines For AJ Lee

After a ten-plus-year hiatus, AJ Lee made her highly anticipated return to WWE just over a week ago on Friday Night SmackDown. She attacked Becky Lynch, who had been tormenting Lee’s husband, CM Punk, throughout that week. It began during Clash In Paris, where Lynch interfered and helped her husband, Seth Rollins, retain the World Heavyweight Title, after she delivered a low-blow to Punk. Lynch continued to be a thorn in Punk’s side until he called in for backup in the form of his wife.

Lynch and Rollins will battle Lee and Punk at Wrestlepalooza in mixed tag-team action, but what happens next? Lee signed a multi-year full-time contract with WWE, so she is not simply here to help her husband, it seems. Here are three potential storyline directions WWE could take.

Feud With Becky Lynch/Title Shot

The stage for a Lee versus Lynch one-on-one rivalry looks set. After the attack by Lee, the only thing on Lynch’s mind was escaping as soon as possible. In fact, she left the ring so fast that her WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship was left behind. At Punk’s suggestion, Lee would then grab the title and try it on. She began skipping across the ring with it and held it up while standing on the middle rope, while a staggered Lynch was helped to the back by Rollins.

Lee would appear the following Monday on Raw, now wearing the IC title around her waist. During her promo, Lynch interrupted and confronted Lee about the fact that she was wearing a title that did not belong to her. Lee pretended as if she was unaware of this fact, but then admitted that she had been skipping around the house all weekend with it and even slept with the title on.

Rollins would make his way to the ring and attempt to retrieve the belt for his wife after Lee laid it in the middle of the ring for Lynch to get. Punk would then intervene, resulting in Rollins having to escape a GTS attempt. Lee eventually threw the title back to Lynch after Rollins agreed to the Wrestlepalooza contest. That match should continue the Punk versus Rollins rivalry and officially start one between Lee and Lynch, with the latter leading to an IC title match.

Picking Back Up With Nikki Bella

Before her retirement in 2015, Lee had numerous encounters with WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella. That includes her being one of the targets of the “pipe bomb” promo, where Lee questioned the abilities of several WWE superstars in the divas division.

Do you want to know what I see when I look in that ring? Honestly? A bunch of cheap, interchangeable, expendable, useless women. Women who have turned to reality television because they just weren’t gifted enough to be actresses. And they just weren’t talented enough to be champion.

Bella would definitely prove to be talented enough over the years, especially after defeating Lee (albeit with a distraction to Lee from Brie Bella) for the Divas Championship at Survivor Series in 2014. That was the last time Lee was a champion in WWE, as she was again defeated at TLC in a title rematch the following month. Bella also won the final singles match between the two just shortly before Lee’s retirement.

Even though Lee was victorious in various tag matches against Bella during that time period, perhaps the one-on-one woes have stuck with her over the years. That may lead to a renewal of this once-heated rivalry down the line.

Teaming With Roxanne Perez

Roxanne Perez grew up idolizing Lee, and The Prodigy probably would not be in WWE without that influence. They refer to each other as mother and daughter, and would surely love to share the ring at some point. About a week before her return, Lee responded to a post that she was tagged in, where Perez delivered her Pop Rocks finisher to Punk.

Yes, she sided with her “daughter” over her actual husband.

The potential path to this duo would be interesting, as Perez is making waves as a heel, and Lee has instantly become one of the most beloved baby faces in the women’s division again. The pending return of Liv Morgan, who was recently spotted at the WWE Performance Center (via Newsweek), could serve as the jumping-off point.

Once Morgan returns, it may force Raquel Rodriguez to choose between her and Perez as a tag partner. Even though Rodriguez is now more accepting of Perez, her loyalty seems to still be with Morgan. That could lead to Morgan and Rodriguez turning on Perez, and Lee intervening to even the score. A tag-team run with “mom and daughter” could ensue from there!

End Of My WWE AJ Lee Rant

The return to WWE for Lee seemed to be merely a pipe dream, but after ten long years, it finally happened! With all that she has endured over the years, however, the hiatus was understandable to say the least. In addition to the spine and neck injuries that occurred throughout her career, she also has bipolar disorder. During her promo last week on Raw, she mentioned her mental health journey, leaving powerful words of encouragement in the process.

Something that really stood out to me during that promo was the line in which she said, “and I thought that was the end of my story.” During an interview in 2021, Lee mentioned that during her time in WWE, she booked a separate hotel room and contemplated suicide. Fortunately, after not being able to reach her local suicide prevention hotline, she was able to speak to a man after dialing 311. She credits that person for saving her life, due to his kindness and patience with her.

I think I can speak for everyone when saying we are happy that her story is not over, on multiple levels. Get ready for an exciting and crazy second run from Lee, as she will once again light it up in WWE!
