WWE NXT continues to shock and impress its viewers and this week’s episode is no exception. The Hardy Boyz’ return to the WWE is a welcome one by many fans. It’s no surprise to find that the WWE/TNA partnership has been a roaring success.
TNA’s most popular and nostalgic acts locking up with WWE’s future main event stars has created a string of enthralling crossovers that continue to benefit both promotions. However, the announcement that legendary tag team and current TNA Tag Team Champions, the Hardy Boyz, are set to make their return to WWE this week is arguably the most exciting crossover yet.
Despite multiple exits and returns to WWE, the Hardy Boyz remain an incredibly popular tag team with a cult-like following. Staples of the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras, the Hardy Boyz’s popularity was driven by their appetite for the extreme. Their acclaimed rivalry with Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boyz defined WWE’s most exciting era of tag team wrestling.
Before their highly anticipated NXT bout against Tavion Heights and Myles Borne of the No Quarter Catch Crew this week, revisiting the Hardy Boyz best WWE tag team matches is an absolute must.
WWE Armageddon, 2006
A memorable match for both the right and wrong reasons. Still, there were a number of great ingredients to this four-way ladder match. The arrogance of MNM, the incomparable heel work of Regal, the young and daring London and Kendrick, as well as the reliably dangerous Hardy Boyz made for an intriguing showdown. Surprisingly, London and Kendrick retained the titles however it was Joey Mercury’s gruesome spot that lived long in the memory.
WrestleMania 16, 2000
While these three iconic tag teams had crossed paths many times before, WrestleMania 16 was the first time they had faced each other in a three-way tag match. Keen to capitalize on their popularity and the added jeopardy of the ladder stipulation, the match featured a number of memorable spots that would provide the foundations for a career-defining match one year later.
One Night Stand, 2007
The Hardy Boyz’ ladder match against Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas is an underrated gem, with the latter’s impressive athleticism lending itself well to the Hardy’s extreme antics. Notably, Benjamin executed a number of remarkable spots. His springboard somersault dropkick from a ladder outside of the ring is up there with his finest MITB spots.
SummerSlam, 2000
The history-making first ever TLC match had to include these three teams. The Dudley Boyz (tables), the Hardy Boyz (ladders), and Edge and Christian (chairs) brought their weapon of choice to the showdown, and the match didn’t disappoint.
Again, it showcased the talents and fearlessness of each team. Only this time with the added peril of demolished tables and skull-shattering ConChairTos.
WrestleMania 17, 2001
The culmination of an incredible rivalry and an all-timer in the WrestleMania pantheon. The WrestleMania 17 TLC is a highlight reel stretched out to sixteen minutes. Few can forget Edge’s Spear off the ladder or Matt Hardy and Bubba Ray Dudley’s triple table splash.
Jeff’s attempted triple ladder leap symbolized the ingenuity and daring associated with this passage in WWE history. Interventions from Spike Dudley, Lita, and Rhyno only added to the unpredictability of the match.
Sadly, the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz were unable to stop Edge and Christian from winning again. But more importantly, the match stands as a WWE classic and a career-defining match for all involved.
