AEW brings Bryan Danielson back in a new role

Bryan Danielson is returning to AEW, but it won't be inside the ring.

"The American Dragon" has been a well-received guest commentator at different points over the last 12 months. His most recent appearance on the announcer's desk came during the main card of the "Forbidden Door" pay-per-view from AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

On Saturday, AEW president Tony Khan made the announcement that Danielson will now be a full-time member of the commentary team for AEW Dynamite.

Danielson's addition will add some much-needed vibrancy to the commentary team while hopefully providing a fresh voice. His wrestling knowledge, status with the fanbase and love for the sport have all been impressive additions during his spot appearances.

Bryan Danielson has no regrets over his retirement

During a recent interview with SENQ 693, Danielson explained why he is fulfilled with what he accomplished during his in-ring career. He also explained why he's at peace with his decision to retire following a string of injuries.

"I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have some incredible moments and all that kind of stuff," Danielson said. "...There’s not a single thing. I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have some incredible moments and all that kind of stuff ... On the plane here, I was watching old wrestling to show younger talent like, 'Hey, here’s some things that people used to do in wrestling, here are some intricacies that have been lost in the evolution of professional wrestling that you could use today that would work really well.'"

Given the nature of his injuries, it's unlikely we ever see Danielson back in the ring. However, having him call the action from the sidelines is the next best thing. He would undoubtedly be thrilled to still be in and around AEW.

This could be start of new chapter for Bryan Danielson

AEW's commentary team features another former wrestler turned play-by-play announcer in Taz. Therefore, Danielson will have a blueprint he can follow if he wants to make commentary the next part of his story in the wrestling business. Taz has also had a stint with WWE on its commentary team.

For now, though, Danielson's focus should be on helping build up the AEW product and adding some urgency to specific segments. One of the current commentary team's biggest weaknesses is glossing over huge moments without explaining why they're key for the audience.

If Danielson does want to stay in wrestling long-term, odds are he will have a home in AEW. He's earned that level of loyalty, and clearly, he's still doing what he can to help Khan and the company to keep moving forward.
