Hangman Page and Samoa Joe met face-to-face

(When two fantastic promos are on the mic, it can set the stage for the match, feud, and even show. This segment did just that. Both Joe and Page feel justified as babyfaces, and as a big fan of both, I’m torn.)

Page called back to AEW’s six-year history, listing his wins, losses, crime of arson, tenure as the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, and Dark Order proposing to him. He then shifted his attention to Joe’s recent acts of violence. Mentioning their triple threat match with Swerve Strickland during Revolution 2024, Page brought up the circumstances of Joe’s victory. However, as a debt to Joe’s assistance during his ascent to Men’s World Championship gold, Page acknowledged that Joe deserved this title shot. The generosity and favors would stop there.

Joe agreed with Page’s remarks. He emphasized that the Opps’s involvement was the only reason Page is where he’s at. He then accused him of using his clout to “pad his stats.” Believing Page to be a fraud, Joe feels it’s his mission to “check” him. Joe finished his piece by stating he’d retake his rightful place as Men’s World Champion.

Page retorted that Joe’s accusations were false. Moreover, he’d have no reason to tap out at WrestleDream, and he’d outlast him. Then they stared, Page with a world of rage in his eyes, while Joe’s lay still in stoic waters.

Conglomeration & Roderick Strong promo

Mark Briscoe passionately detailed each member’s upcoming matches and wished them all well. Everyone (including Alicia Atout) placed their hands together. Except Strong, though.

Jon Moxley defeated Tomohiro Ishii

(It’s easy to see why some would hate when there are repeated pin attempts, but it worked in this case. Moxley dumped everything he had to try and earn those 3 seconds, yet only one thing would prevail. Moxley had to outright squeeze the life out of Ishii to win.)

Both men traded elbows, resulting in Moxley sneaking in a knee. Ishii absorbed this and dished it back out with a shoulder tackle that tumbled Moxley to the ringside. Neither raking Ishii’s eyes nor slamming his skull into the ringpost could halt the Stone Pitbull; he sent the Death Rider into the barricade as he frantically scurried off. Before Ishii could take advantage, Shafir subdued him on the apron, leading to Moxley striking him down.

Continuing to focus on Ishii’s eyes and nose, he could not consistently dull the Japanese wrestler’s senses. Ishii quickly rose up, surviving more offense and dropping Moxley with a vertical suplex while his nose dripped with blood. Driving Ishii back into a corner, Moxley rained down fists on his opponent’s skull. Ishii no-sold it and powerbombed Moxley. Consecutive headbutts and a lariat certified Ishii’s control of the match. Moxley ascended with a comeback courtesy of a running knee.

Much like a cockroach, Ishii refused Moxley’s Cutter, Stalled Piledriver, and Curb Stomp, defiant with each endurance. Pulling Moxley in for a headlock, Ishii held it until Moxley turned purple. Moxley returned the favor with a rear-naked choke to finish Ishii once and for all.

Young Bucks Knocked on Tony Khan’s Door

Renee Paquette greeted the Bucks, asking what their thoughts would be on Jurassic Express’s tag team return match. Seemingly, they didn’t care as they were preoccupied with convincing Khan to put them in another money match to regain their lost wealth.

Renee Paquette narrated the accolades of the current and former Women’s World Champions and the monumental implications for each competitor come WrestleDream.

Hurt Syndicate (MVP, Bobby Lashley, & Shelton Benjamin) defeated The Demand (Ricochet, Toa Liona, & Bishop Kaun)

(Carnage. Glorious, glorious carnage.)

The Demand swiftly prepared the plunder for the match. They met the Syndicate at the ramp, trading fists and kendo stick strikes. Still wearing his white-collar, button-up shirt, Lashley battered Liona, whereas Benjamin lost his gold tie while manhandling Kaun. Erstwhile, Ricochet had MVP kneeling prior to an assault by Ricochet’s cohorts. Lashley resumed his abuse of Liona, while MVP caught Ricochet hiding baldly under a table. In the ring, Benjamin slammed Kaun onto a steel chair.

MVP held Liona by his arms, leaving him susceptible to Benjamin’s strikes. Ricochet got a running start, knocking them and the nearby Lashley and Kaun down. Kaun rose with a fire, taking down all three Syndicate members, giving Liona and Ricochet ample time to recover. Liona didn’t enjoy the benefits for long and would’ve been speared through a table had Kaun not thrown a chair at Lashley in time. Liona sent the Almighty through that table. All three members of The Demand propped Lashley on another table across from them and dropped him through it.

Liona blasted MVP through a barricade. This left Benjamin isolated and helpless, prime for The Demand’s coordinated offense. Placed upon the table, Benjamin suffered its unyielding structure and Riccochet’s 450-Splash. MVP returned, stumbling himself and Liona through the table. Benjamin vaulted a sprinting Ricochet over his shoulder to ringside, laying everyone out to aim a knee on Kaun. Ricochet sacrificed himself, intercepting this strike and firing back with a chairshot. Kaun prepared to send Benjamin through the table when Lashley speared him away.

Incensed, the Almighty collided with Liona, coming out on top with a Spinebuster through a table. The Syndicate cornered Ricochet, leaving nowhere for him to run (he was too dazed to anyway). Lashley suplexed Ricochet through a table and got the pinfall victory.

Don Callis Gloated His Family’s Success

Still proud of Kyle Fletcher’s TNT Championship reign, Callis boasted his chances against Kyle O’Reilly tonight.

Jurassic Express (Jack Perry & Luchasaurus) defeated Local Competitors

(This moved so fast, I don’t think that anybody could process who the enhancement talents were!)

Perry made fast work of a competitor wearing black and blue. Luchasaurus added further punishment. Perry attempted to remove a turnbuckle pad much to Aubrey Edwards’s chagrin. The Young Bucks were shown in the crowd. Luchasaurus knocked out the legal man’s partner to the outside and powerslammed the black-and-blue opponent, giving Perry a pinfall.

Post-match, The Young Bucks toppled Luchasaurus, jabbed a microphone to Perry’s midsection, and left him horizontal after a Piledriver.

Pac Promised Orange Cassidy Would Suffer

Pac, Wheeeler Yuta, and Daniel Garcia expressed their desire to rid AEW of “losers” like Orange Cassidy.

Kyle Fletcher defeated Kyle O’Reilly for the TNT Championship

(Incredible chemistry for competitors who share the same name.)

O’Reilly kept Fletcher grounded, eventually felling him with a kneebar. The champion soon dropped O’Reilly and kept the momentum, unleashing chop after chop. O’Reilly wriggled out with palm strikes and an armbar. Fletcher crushed O’Reilly with a Michinoku Driver. O’Reilly swung a comeback, using his signature offense and transitioning a Guillotine Stretch to a Triangle Choke. Torquing Fletcher’s knee, O’Reilly relented to a rope break.

Decorating the barricade with Fletcher’s carcass, O’Reilly dropkicked the Aussie into it for additional damage. Somehow, O’Reilly maintained an armbar even as Fletcher used his strength to propel both wrestlers into a corner. O’Reilly worked Fletcher’s legs, relentless in his pursuit. Full speed ahead, O’Reilly barreled into the back of the champion’s skull with a knee. Fletcher gained respite with a Brainbuster. Flying Kick and a Brainbuster sealed O’Reilly’s fate as the loser of this bout.

Post-match, Rocky Reomero and Lance Archer assaulted O’Reilly, but the Conglomeration came to his aid. Mark Briscoe and Fletcher met in a standstill that saw the TNT Champion retreating with his posse.

Kyle Fletcher interviewed by Renee Paquette

Fletcher responded to Paquette’s questions about yielding to Mark Briscoe, calling into question any fears he might have. Fletcher assured her he wasn’t afraid, but he and Don Callis were shaken by the revelation that a TNT Championship Match at WrestleDream.

Mercedes Mone defeated Lacy Layne for the TBS Championship

(If that debut wasn’t exciting enough, the in-ring action after surely satiated that appetite.)

Formerly Kayden Carter of WWE, the debuting star promptly targeted Mone’s arm. Layne blasted Mone with consecutive kicks. An insane trajectory of momentum allowed her to overwhelm the champion, resulting in a slam. Evoking Eddie Guerrero with the usage of the Three Amigos, Mone punctuated the homage with a Frog Splash (which missed). Mone grew overconfident with a Flipping Powerbomb, nearly succumbing to a Hammerlock Flatliner. The pair exchanged roll-ups, leading Mone to flash a Statement Maker to demolish Layne for the victory.

Don Callis Family (Kazuchika Okada & Konsuke Takeshita) defeated BroDido (Bandido & Brody King)

(Despite the level of talent involved, this match fell flat compared to the other incredible matches tonight. Still, it was a thrill ride from bell to bell.)

Takeshita initially got the upper hand on Bandido, but King’s addition to the equation proved far greater than the Alpha could calculate. Okada thought he could make the save, but suffered BroDido’s wrath. A lucky pair of DDTs wore down the force that was King, yet the month of tension between them persisted. Undeniably winded, King managed a double-lariat with the last vestiges of his strength. Despite his shoulder injury, Bandido sped off to an overwhelming flurry of offense, leading to a vertical suplex on Okada. Takeshita tried to rescue his partner, but King hurled him through the ropes.

Takeshita leapt to Okada’s aid in preventing a pinfall and dragged him to make the pin. Though he gave his all, BroDido wasted no time in demolishing the Alpha with coordinated tag team action. Okada plunged Bandido’s weak shoulder into the ropes, gifting Takeshita with a chance for Raging Fire. Hurricanrana by Takeshita subdued Bandido. Okada was late to make a tag, but stole the glory with a Rainmaker to earn the pair a championship match at WrestleDream.

JetSpeed (“Speedball” Mike Bailey & Kevin Knight) and Willow Nightingale Prepared for FTR

Undeterred by the addition of Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford in the FTR cavalry, Nightingale and JetSpeed overlooked them and made fun of Stokely Hathaway.

FTR & Stokely Hathaway Addressed JetSpeed & Willow Nightingale’s Previous Segment

An irate Hathaway expressed his disdain for Nightingale while praising JetSpeed’s bravery in challenging FTR. Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford informed JetSpeed and Nightingale that they were not strong enough to get past them.

Bandido Blamed Himself For BroDido’s Earlier Loss

Shaky and upset, Bandido placed the blame for Don Callis Family’s victory on himself. Brody King assured it was not his fault and that they’d overtake Kazuchika Okada and Konosuke Takeshita at WrestleDream.

Orange Cassidy defeated Pac

(Years later, and these two still deliver.)

Both acrobats danced around each other’s grappling. Aloof at Cassidy’s shenanigans, the Brit clutched his denim-clad opponent with a Headlock Takedown. Cassidy bounced Pac across the corners. Pac downed Cassidy on the outside with a resounding Falcon Arrow. Pac’s dropkick left Cassidy exhausted. Delivering his patented weak chops, Cassidy then engaged in a spirited trade of forearms. Release German Suplex via Pac nearly transitioned into a Beach Break, but culminated in a Penalty Kick instead. A Stundog Millionaire added fuel to Cassidy’s momentum.

Leaving Pac flat on a table, Cassidy inserted his hands into his pockets and projected himself into the Brit through the wood. Absconding with his elbow pad, Cassidy almost finished the bout with an Orange Punch. Perched on the top rope once more, Cassidy’s hopes were dashed as Pac mocked him in a slow roll out. In the stands, Pac piledrove Cassidy and kicked him down the stairs. Before he could inflict further harm, Darby Allin emerged from behind to handcuff him. At the 9-count, Pac somersaulted into the ring over the top rope. Eagerly anticipating this, Cassidy stole the match from Pac with a Casadora Roll-up.

Post-match, Darby Allin gazed at Pac from the stands. Pac and some of the Death Riders sought ot brawl with Allin. Moxley angrily chased him up the ramp. Security speared Allin before he could light a Molotov Cocktail, ending the show in chaos and bedlam.

Final thoughts

Every match delivered in some way. By far the most exciting part was Lacy Layne’s introduction to AEW following her WWE release. Hangman and Samoa Joe set the stage for their bout wonderfully. In such a short time, WrestleDream’s card has been stacked from top to bottom.
